Fighting the Fearsome Foe

Speaker:
Passage: 1 Samuel 17:1-58

Bible Text: 1 Samuel 17:1-58 | Speaker: Pastor James Hinton

In spite of what’s been happening the last couple of years, we still live in an infinitely more secure and safe environment than our ancestors did. Even though we live, in many ways, in the safest possible world that’s ever existed, all indications are we are still… in fact, we are more anxious; we are more fraught with fears. We have more trouble facing life than even our ancestors did. Many of us struggle a great deal with fear.

Where do we get courage? That’s what the passage is about. Notice there are three figures here. Sometimes we miss that. There’s Saul and the missing courage. There’s Goliath and the counterfeit courage. There’s David and the true courage.

As we look at this familiar text we clearly see some key actions and attitudes from Israel, Goliath, and, most importantly, from David.
