The second command was instituted to deal with worshiping the Right God in the Right Way. We are not to worship him the form of any man-made idol. Whereas the first commandment forbids us to worship false gods, the second commandment forbids us to worship the true God falsely. How we worship is nearly as important as whom we worship.
