The Passover is a significant event for the formation of Israel’s identity and in the Bible’s story. So it’s easy to think of it and teach it as a stand-alone event. But of course it’s actually the tenth of ten plagues. It’s the climax of the great showdown between Moses and Pharaoh, between the God of Israel and the gods of Egypt. God says, “I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord” (12:12). Remember that these ten plagues are in response to the question that was asked in Chapter 5 “Who is the Lord?…That I should obey His voice?” This is God’s response! Because of the hardening of Pharaoh’s heart, this was always going to be a contest to the death. And Exodus 12 is a chapter of death.
